Ohio Family and Consumer Sciences
In Ohio 1,097 FCS teachers serve 170,000 high school students, 37,000 middle school students, and 5,300 GRADS (pregnant and parenting) students (ODE, 2010 data). Since there is currently a high rate of retirements among teachers the demand for FCS teachers is high and Ohio is not meeting this demand.
Student enrollment in FCS teacher programs at Ohio universities has been low due to the pressure schools and teachers face related to the economic down turn in the U.S. and the changes in what it takes to become and remain a teacher in Ohio.
In Ohio there are five universities preparing Family and Consumer Science teachers. In order to assist our recruitment efforts, find below the five institutions and the contact people who are working to recruit and prepare the next generations of FCS teachers for Ohio
